Discourse: Reconsidering Digital Surrogates by Bradley L. Taylor

Key Points & reflection:
  • This texts starts with themes of the digitisation of art, Digital reproductions and the original. It addresses issues of human sensory perceptions, and aesthetic experience of objects.
  • Paradigm shift: "a fundamental reorientation from object to viewer"p.175.
  • Later in the text references to Walter Benjamin's 'aura of the original'.
  • Emotions depend on the location in which the artwork is seen - for example when hanging on a gallery wall, emotions were higher than when a painting was moved to storage. The gallery plays a part in the artworks aura. p.180.
  • In the era of customised content e.g. iphone, suggesting how the museum is changing in this era.
Reflections:
  • Overall, this text allowed me to gain insight into how the viewer perceives the work of art in the gallery, but I'm not sure if it will be useful to refer to within my work.
