Welcome to my MA Fine Art Blog (Online Sketchbook & Reflective Log combined)

Name: Alexandria Frances Clow
Student Number: 12370911
Course: MA FINE ART
Module: Exhibition
Title: Sculpture Reconstructed
Module Code: ART9005M
University of Lincoln

This blog contains all documentation of my studio work, research and reflective learning comprising from this module.

This blog is in date order, starting from the most recent first. Please click 'older posts' at the bottom right hand corner of each page, to see the next set of pages, until you reach the very start of the blog, and then click 'newer posts' from there to see the work in order of its creation.
On the left hand side you will see 'categories' where you can browse blog posts in their sections if you wish.

My installation of final pieces titled 'Sculpture Reconstructed' for this module is exhibited in the Project Space Plus gallery, while my assisting studio work and other samples are in my studio space.

  • Please also see my offline copy of the reflective journal/ log, which also includes other paper texts and assisting information, (note that this is also set out the same way as this blog, so it goes from back to front in order of date). Please note that not all my studio work will be in my offline reflective log folder, so it is imperative to view this blog in full.
  • Please see my folder labeled 'annotated texts', for the texts that I have found most influential this term, (the analysis of the texts are at the front of the folder and the texts themselves are towards the back). I have also uploaded a digital copy of these texts to this blog, under the page on the left hand side 'Annotated Texts (Digital Copy).
  • And finally please see my other assisting sketchbook, everything is labelled and in my studio space.
  • If you would like to see how I present and document my work professionally, please visit my artist website http://www.alexandriafrances.co.uk
I have provided an ethical approval form and risk assessment forms.

Evaluation of Module

Final Installation View:

  • Overall, I wouldn't have done anything differently about each of these final pieces, or the installation which I believe I have completed to the highest standard I could.
  • A future development for this style of work - my welding detail onto mild steel - would be to find some kind of varnish that doesn't discolor or darken the steel, so that the image can be preserved forever.

Continuing with Instagram Role

Documentation of my upkeep of the MAtter Fine Art Instagram:

  • This was an important role to help take especially on the build up to the exhibition, and I need to post between 1-2 posts a day (also part managed by Orinta but the following imagery and writing are my own).

  • My aim is: to take close up details that capture the work without giving too much away. The writing alongside should credit the artist and entice the viewer.

Upcoming photos: Going round the studio to capture imagery:

Business Cards

  • For this design I inverted a photo of my steel welding piece on illustrator and used it as a patterned background.
  • The colours of my name and title are also similar to that found on my steel welding piece (the blue from the heat distortion, and the orange for the rust).
  • I will stack these near my work from the 15th September from the preview night.

Creating a Showreel for MAtter

FINAL SHOWREEL:
  • Placing logo in right-hand corner, and artist name in left hand corner of each picture, this worked best. This will be placed on the TV as you walk in .

Testing Full Gallery Placement + Lighting

Installing The Reconstruction of Sculpture:

  • The screw rods go with the other mechanical details up there - and match the screw rods up there.
  • The rectangle bars slot nicely over this to hide the rods before the bolt, and go with the look of the frame.

Installing Resin Piece

  • Measuring it so it's central

  • Placing it exactly central, or as central as I could make it look, to the other two art works.

Testing Lighting

  • Lighting the canvas. I tested multiple positions for the spotlights until I was happy with the two spot lights either side that shone across the canvas to light and reflects the silver leaf.

  • Light shining across the surface, but no light directly above this piece as it would be too much.

  • Adding two spotlights to hit the top of this canvas. This worked to create depth, pick up the distortion and bends in the metal, and light the very top which was more in shadow because of the opposing window.

Installing Vinyl

  • I kept all the vinyl central, and each of the titles central to each other, so everything is in one central line from this point.

Lighting the back of the canvas:

  • I bought an extra clip on light as I wasn't happy with the amount of light hitting the back of the canvas.
  • I positioned this at the top of the support beam so it shone on the back, testing out different positions until I got the best lighting to pick up the details on the back.
  • I needed to make the viewer aware that this wasn't just the back of the artwork but in fact another image itself.

Final Installation View:

  • Professional set up. I am very happy with the layout of my work and the full installation. It is exactly how I wanted it to be, and feel that I couldn't have done it any differently.

Photographs of Resin Pallet Once Set & Thinking of a Title

Photos of Resin when Set:

Reflections
  • Overall I couldn't be happier with the decisions I made to resolve this piece, and it has become a much higher quality version of itself by applying the resin.
  • The resin works to create consistent high shine, and brings out the small details within the paint work.

Titles:

  • Something shipping related so that it connects to this critique of art shipping and the fact it's a pallet.
  • Possible play on standard/ economy shipping, or first class shipping implying it's luxury / expensive.
  • Economy = low class, cheap
  • FedEx: very fast and reliable
  • FedEx Freight: for heavy or oversize packages.
  • DHL: very fast and reliable, large discounts
  • Not sure about using brand names.. maybe something like priorty shipping could be best.
Priority shipping
This suggests that what I have done to the pallet, to transform it, it is the best it could possibly be.

Freight
Taking the fedex brand away from this, freight means:
1 goods transported in bulk by truck, train, ship, or aircraft.

  1. "a decline in the amount of freight carried by rail"

    synonyms:cargoloadhaulconsignmentdeliveryshipmentMore
  1. 1
transport (goods) in bulk by truck, train, ship, or aircraft.

"the metals had been freighted from the city"

    synonyms:transport, transport in bulk, conveycarryshipdriveMore
2
be laden or burdened with.
  • I think this could be quite a good play on words
Overall, I will chosse Priority Shipping as my title.
