Research & Studio: Artist Connection - Anselm Reyle

A peer told me to research Anselm Reyle as he has an aesthetic in his paintings that resemble my own sculptures. Anselm Reyle is an abstract artist that works specifically with painting, found objects, and merges the lines between painting and sculpture. His work has been linked to modernism by critiquing and reinventing it. (https://www.artsy.net/artist/anselm-reyle)

  • This sculptural painting above exhibits textural details beautifully and the frame suits the form for this one perfectly, the texture doesn't look like it wants to escape from the canvas unlike his foil paintings:

Foil Paintings

"Exploring unconventional materials such as Mylar foil or mirrors, Reyle expands upon the prevailing aesthetics of painting and sculpture." - http://www.alminerech.com/artists/169-anselm-reyle

  • Reyle's work appears to be sculpture that is forced to sit on the wall in a condensed space. They seem to be stuck in their boxes, or canvas / square shapes, and it could be argued that the painting needs to be freer in order to work with this sort of material, to express its aesthetic quality entirely and consume the viewer.
  • That being said I do quite like the way it is framed in this space and it could perhaps be seen as a conflict between the materials and its context or form. The paintings look like they are in a physical conflict with their own materiality, and it is perhaps this conflict that drives the artist.
  • The textural details within the painting is what interests me most about Reyle's work, and the details within his work which come from the reflective materials, combined with the black textured painting method in 'untitled 2007'.

Further Development

  • This framing manner is something I'm getting more inspired by recently, to contain works rather than free them. I am more interested with form and structure now, and want to create metal works with a frame, that resembles paintings.
  • Experiment with detailed textural painting styles like Reyle does in Untitled 2007 and White Earth 2009.

Further Studio Work Inspired by Anselm Reyle:

  • This was a quick experiment where I wrapped foil around a previous silver painting I did last term.
  • The square format worked well to compliment the lines and tones of the super reflective foil.
  • I experimented how to wrap the foil, and whether to leave some of the silver textured painting behind exposed. I like the contrast between the two - it's like a fake or trying-to-be silver underneath a super-reflective and loud silver.
  • Already doing this experiment, it has caused me to realise how I just want to produce actual fully completed 'things' now, or art objects.
