Discourse: Capitalist Realism by Mark Fisher

Key Points:

    • The text takes aim at corporation driven capitalism.
    • It's just the way it is - capitalism.
    • Animated film as an example...
    • Capitalist footprint
    • No way of getting away from capitalism - Tate run by establishment elite
    • Other options - socialism, Communism ...
    • Culture of Greece was so based upon exchange, which was Greece's downfall.
    • Pay for everything... water could become so precious... why not air?
    • Conservation side of things could trump capitalism... where the care of the planet is more important than consuming...
    • I don't agree with capitalism anymore, I agree with it in a way but when it goes too far it goes too far, there needs to be a balance.
    • Grenfell Tower thing, they used cheaper cladding to save money, make a big profit, but it came at a greater price and cost lives.
    • We're so far in, so much investment ... maybe there is no other option but capitalism.
    • There's no way at the moment that we can function without the exchange of money - Fishers distinction in the text...
    • Capitalist + realist capitalism is about control, exploitation is the tipping point - drug companies.
    • Contactless - allows you to spend more than you have - instead of physical cash which puts limits on things.
    • Greed drives capitalism.

    Reflections:
    • Does anyone believe in capitalism? I think we have to, rather than a belief it's a way of life... not an option.
