Studio: Finishing Mild Steel

Reflection, viewing the piece so far:

Finished:

Full side on other side so far

Reflections:

  • I really enjoyed the process of making this piece. The process wasn't entirely random as I responded to the metal and how it changed as it heated up. The more saturated the heat was in one area, the bluer it went.
  • I responded to the changes in the metal as it warped as I welded different areas, so this caused me to counter the warp by welding in opposite directions.
  • It became a conversation with the material and a response from me. I tried to balance the painting as well with areas of colour saturation, and areas of blank canvas after feedback.
  • I want to add more welding to the top left hand corner as the colours aren't saturated enough there.

Feedback:

  • "Overall both sides look really impressive and you need to show both sides".
  • "Perhaps you need more blue areas, maybe test the torch around the edges to see how it would look. More details would work well if possible and the boarders around the edges of the gaps look really good."

Further Development:

  • Not sure whether to add anything else to it, or take it to Ann's workshop and use the flames on it around the edge to turn it bluer.
  • I feel really content with the way that the piece looks as it is, on both sides. I really don't know whether to add anything else to it at the moment.
  • I need a full look at it within the space.
  • I need to figure out where and how to hang it. I was thinking using a metal chain or metal wire to hang it if possible.
  • Need to finish by varnishing this on both sides with spray varnish
